Securing London’s competitiveness and economic growth

The €200 million Ocean Estate regeneration programme in Stepney started in 2010, and is now in full swing. g15 group member East Thames, in partnership with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Wates Living Space, Spitalfields Housing Association and Bellway, is building over 800 new homes, refurbishing around 1,200 social-rented homes and making big improvements to the landscape and community facilities.

Excellent progress has already been achieved. Residents have been working with our architects on the landscape designs for the estate, and we have now finished the first phase of landscaping work on the Mile End Road frontage. More than 600 homes have received new kitchens and bathrooms and work has begun to windows and roofs which will transform more than 1,000 homes by 2013. By late 2012, the first of more than 800 new homes will be available for social rent, shared ownership and private sale.

Better homes and new homes will make a huge difference to the area. But we have also been focused on providing residents with employment, training and volunteering opportunities.

We are:

  • Working with our partners to offer employment and training opportunities. Our aim is to ensure at least 20% of jobs are for people living in the borough.
  • Offering the Community Champions course to increase volunteering and help people get job ready.
  • Providing community chest grants to new and existing community
    groups on the estate.
  • Supporting a full range of consultation opportunities, including a
resident’s forum, recruiting block representatives and consulting
residents on things like the landscaping options.
